2005 Florida LAN News
Back on June 29th, 2004 Silver decided that he wanted to have a Team NuB only LAN party. Things did not look too good, no commitments from anyone that was not local. On July 12th, the date was narrowed down to October, and then on the 13th, Columbus Day weekend was picked. But still no commitments.
Then it started happening. Slowly, people started making serious plans. Plane tickets were being bought. Arrival dates were being given. This thing is really going to happen!
Well, Columbus Day weekend 2004, we ROCKED!
Think we can pull it off again?
Its that time, and yes, we are doing it again!
2005 Descent 3 Florida LAN
August 1- It's all over. The south did it again. Everyone had a great time, and even so, I'm sure everyone is happy, and safe back at their own homes now. Spirit and I enjoyed having everyone over, and playing a few games of Descent 3. Look at the photo's below to see those who were there, and the fun we had.
July 29- I didn't think I was going to make it, and I didn't. I picked up Fusion around 8pm, and I still was not ready. Bunip and 007GUY showed up around noon time on the 30th, and I had not set up the networking yet. But we were all flying by 8pm, and having a great time. Check out the photos at the bottom of this page.
July 26- NVIDIA® has announced that they too will sponsor our LAN, and send us some swag! Talk about last minute, but they did come through. Hey, Now I'm happy (though I'm still waiting for the swag to show).
July 8- ATI Came through. A FedEx package came today with some goodies. That was nice of them! I just wish they'd fix the name of the LAN Party on their site. Now, where are the other sponsors???
June 24- There is a possibility that TigerDirect might be able to help me out with the CRT monitor rentals. I stopped by the outlet store on my way home from work today and told him of my situation. He said he'd check and see what he could do. So those needing monitors, let me know the size you would like to rent, and the size you'd be willing to use so that when he comes back to me and asks me what I need (would like), I can tell him. Then we can work out rental pricing.
June 23 - I was asked about the LAN from someone who had seen it on ATI's LAN sponsor page. I told him, I did not even know that ATi had agreed to sponsor this LAN! Glad to see that they have decided to do so, as it seems that people are taking notice. We have one, and maybe a couple more interested, that might be adding their names to the Attendee list soon.
June 22 - I was asked about a cutoff date for registering, and realized that I had not set one. So, here it is. As I need time to get the tables, chairs, etc, Registration ends 1 week before the LAN, on the 23rd of July.
June 14 - At the very least, a 2500 watt generator has been secured. It wont keep the LAN going in the event of a power outage, but it will keep the frig running (food and drinks COLD), and run a few fans to keep the air moving.
June 4 - Due to health reasons, Deadmeat will be unable to make it to the Florida LAN this year. All donations have been returned.
May 30 - I'm working on a design for a shirt logo. Here is one that I have done so far. I think I need to start from scratch though, as my iron-on transfers only work on white shirts, and a light background is needed.
May 26 - Seems the great leader of Team NuB has had a minor setback. The water pump in his car went out, and he had to have the thing towed home. He can either Go to the LAN, or, get his car fixed. I'd like to see both. Anyone wanting to help him out with a donation, please do so via the PayPal, or email links below. If you want, I will post your name here, and the amount (again, if you want), and keep a total of how much has been collected. If Deadmeat does not make it to the LAN, all donations will be returned (but I seriously doubt that he will NOT be here).
Thanks to the following for their efforts. All Donations have been returned
May 12 - This might get a little bigger than I thought. I have room, but not enough tables and chairs. I'm going to have to rent some, and they do not come cheap. I'm going to have to ask that anyone who registers from this point on, bring a $20 registration fee. Sorry, but it has to be done. I know I'm not paying for airfare, but I have many other expenses for the LAN that I will be covering myself. I am going to put a cap on this thing at 30 people, and we are almost, half way there as of this date.
May 5 - A lot of the airline WEB sites are now showing fairs for July. Now is the time to look if you are flying. The two destination airports are going to be Fort Lauderdale (fll), and Miami (mia). They are about an hour apart from each other, and I have found that Fort Lauderdale usually has the better fares. Hopefully, we can get people to arrive, and depart in groups, to make transportation easier.
Officially the LAN will be a Saturday - Sunday (30-31) event. But I’m sure, as last time, early arrivals and late departures can be accommodated. This time, we are asking for a small participation fee to cover some of our expenses. $20 should cover in house (LAN) food, and table & chair requirements for everyone throughout the weekend. You are always welcome to bring your own, or go out for a meal or shopping if you desire. Both locations have stores and restaurants close by. Advance reservation for this LAN is a MUST, so that we know how many to set up for. This is a BYOC event. NO SPEAKERS, headphones are required. Networking switches/hubs will be provided for you to plug your Ethernet cable into. If you do not have an Ethernet cable, or a long enough one, cables will be available for a very reasonable price. This is a FOR FUN LAN. There will be no prizes, no official contests unless a sponsor comes on-board (and sofar, I've not heard anything from anyone but TD, and they have not given me any indication of what they are willing to do).
My plans are to set the computers up in my 2 car garage (yes, its air conditioned) and to use the rest of the house for sleeping (3 bedroom 2 bath). Other than your, and your computer's transportation to and from, this should be a very affordable, and fun weekend.
This LAN will take place rain or shine! Tropical Storms are slow moving, and are tracked fairly accurately. Unless the LAN is in the projected path of a storm, it will still be held.
If you are interested in joining the LAN Mail List, please send an email to email@example.com with the subject as subscribe or contact me via Yahoo IM
note: This is NOT a NuB only LAN. NuB's and other pilots will be attending. Reservation for the LAN is required
Click HERE for USAirways Rates and choose Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL) as your destination. Compare these rates to other carriers. I've found they have some pretty good rates. If you find others, please let me know and I will add them here.
